8 Reasons Why A Freelance Writer Should Use the Internet

What a wonderful resource the Internet is!

Students find information to help them with their studies; business people keep in touch with important clients and stay up to date with important business developments; stay-at-home-parents can find ideas for children's activities and feel less isolated by forging friendships with other online parents; and even small children have the opportunity to learn how to use the technology that will take them into the future.

It seems everybody has a reason to use the Internet and writers are no exception. In fact, the Internet is a resource that once explored, most writers couldn't do without.

Let's take a look at why.

1. Research

This one's almost too obvious to mention but nevertheless, it's the number one reason why a freelancer would use the Net.

While most writers still build up their own library of reference books, without the Internet we'd still be scurrying off to the public library in the hope that they'd have a book about "coinage in ancient Egypt" or "the architect who designed the fountains at Trafalgar Square". Pretty obscure subjects and the likelihood of the library having anything on their shelves was pretty remote. They could probably order something that might help but that could take anything up to a month to arrive.

But now we have the Internet! Tra-la! A few simples keystrokes and up it comes. I now know that coins in ancient Egypt can be traced back to the late dynastic period and that the fountains of Trafalgar Square were designed by Sir Charles Barry. How much easier things are today!

The meanings of names, weights and measures, sunrise times around the world, world Royalty throughout history, how long it takes to drive from Chicago to Los Angeles and what food you're likely to be served in Botswana, all the information's out there just waiting for you to need it.

2. Find Work

While it's still usual to pitch ideas to magazine and newspaper editors and send manuscripts as hardcopy, the Internet has opened up a whole city of avenues for writers.

There are websites specifically designed to help freelancers find work (or project owners find freelancers, depending on how you look at it), and online magazines are often looking for writers who can submit professional content to their sites.

By joining a handful of well-chosen freelance forums, you'll soon discover where to look for work and which markets pay best.

3. Join Support Groups & Communities

Writing is a notoriously lonely profession.

Almost all freelancers work from home and therefore don't have the opportunity to network with others in their profession.

By joining online support groups and communities, freelancers can alleviate some of that loneliness.

Being able to exchange ideas and thoughts with others who know exactly where you're coming from can help a writer get through the day without clawing at the walls too often.

Online communities are also great sources of information that you may otherwise have missed. New markets and new research resources are often discussed and the budding freelancer will be given far more advice from those who've made all the mistakes already, than any book could ever offer.

Local groups sometimes arrange social meets, too. What could be better than lunch with other writers when you've been pulling your hair out because your friends just don't understand that putting words on paper really isn't as easy as it looks.

If only ruined wallpaper and wigs could be written off against tax...

4. Polish Up Your Language Skills

"Their", "there", or "they're"? Or was it "lay" or "lie"? Or possibly even "too", "two", or "to."

And where does that semicolon belong? Oops, it seems I started that sentence with a conjunction. Am I allowed to do that? No? Well I just did! Surely writers can break the rules sometimes, can't they?

The Internet is bursting at the seams with sites designed to help improve your writing.

It doesn't matter how good you think your language skills are, it's always worth testing yourself now and then just to make sure you're still on top of things.

I know I'm a sucker for the comma. They slip in all over the shop and lead to wasted time while I go through my work, whipping them out again. And I'm not alone. Most of us have a little "something" that's peculiar to us. As long as we're aware of it things aren't too bad, but what if you have some little "distinguishing feature" that you don't know about? You wouldn't want to be sending your work off to editors with commas hooked here, there and everywhere, would you?

Some language improvement sites send out regular newsletters that are worth subscribing to. I receive a couple every week and am surprised at just how much I've picked up.

5. Develop A Portfolio

A website is pretty much a necessity for freelancers these days and luckily, they aren't difficult to build.

Your website should give prospective clients information about your background including any relevant education or employment, a bit about who you are and why you write, what your goals are and your areas of expertise. Some freelancers list their basic prices on their websites while others choose not to.

A "clip file" is a must on the website. No matter how much you write about yourself, if you really want to sell yourself you need to give visitors the chance to access a cross-section of your past work.

To get a good idea of what's needed, take a look at other freelancer's sites. Those who have been around for a while have neatly laid out sites that work hard for them. Make sure yours works hard for you, too!

6. Read "How To" Articles

Thousands of freelance writers have posted articles on the Net giving advice to others, whether seasoned writers who are perhaps moving in new directions or newcomers who still have lots to learn about all aspects of the profession.

All sorts of subjects are covered from how to find markets and which topics are most likely to sell to the basics of bookkeeping and how to make uninvited guests understand that you're working even though you're at home.

If you're just starting out as a freelancer, I'd suggest reading at least one "how to" article every day. Believe me, there's far more to learn than you imagine!

7. Keep In Touch

Editors and other project owners are keen to use email as a means of communication so it's worth having a mail account that you can easily access from wherever you happen to be.

Free accounts such as hotmail, yahoo and gmail are all handy for people on the move because you can log in to check your messages from Internet cafes, libraries and friends' houses.

If you're busy working on a project, you might find that the client wants to keep in touch via one of the instant messaging systems that are available these days. MSN, yahoo messenger and AOL instant messenger are the most popular for this use.

Use email to contact your existing clients regularly. As with any other business, it's important to remind them of your services and perhaps offer a discount now and then.

8. Take Payments

Quite often you'll find clients will want to either transfer money directly to your bank account or use an online payment service such as Paypal (www.paypal.com).

If your client transfers money directly to you, checking your account for payments is easy when you have access through the Internet. Just log into your bank and list recent transactions. If the payments been made, you can update your accounts accordingly and know that you can happily work for the client again as nothing's outstanding on his account.

If a client wants to pay via Paypal or another online system for transferring money, you can send an invoice directly through the service and receive an email when the money's received. From there you can either transfer it to your bank account or leave it to accumulate on the Internet account.

If you're planning to use the Internet freelance sites to find work, then a Paypal account is an absolute must. The same goes for some content sites.

In other words, if you want to maximise your earnings, get a Paypal account and do your banking online.

Conclusion

I honestly can't imagine how a freelance writer can manage these days without regular access to the Internet.

Searching the Net will never be the same as browsing the shelves of a library and I suggest you continue using whatever resources your local community has to offer. But for the sake of convenience, the Internet simply can't be beaten.

If you're still not comfortable with computers, sign up for an evening course and learn how to use the basic programmes and find information on the Net. Believe me, once you've started, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.

The Importance Of Incoming Links And Reciprocal Links

Building a web site is only the first step in a long process when starting an online internet business. You need traffic to your web site and the best way to get traffic is through incoming links from other sites.

Incoming links come in a variety of forms. Some rank higher in quality than others as far as the search engines are concerned. The major search engines, Google included will rank your site higher in their listings depending on the amount of quality incoming links you have from other sites. At the time of writing this article it appears that incoming links that do not require you to link back are of better quality than reciprocal linking which does require you to link back.

One of the ways to get quality incoming links to your site without linking back is to submit your site to as many directories as you can. The top 2 directories are Yahoo and the Open Directory Project. But there are literally hundreds more directories that you can submit your site to for free. You can find a few directories on my blog at the following link. http://www.bigmoolla.com/2005/03/submit-to-web-directories.html

Another way to get good quality incoming links without linking back is to use and take part in as many discussion groups and forums as you can. Make sure you us the signature feature and add a link to your website using your targeted keywords in the signature. Each time you post in a forum you will be leaving behind a link to your web site.

The next topic require a bit of work on your part but writing articles like this one can create hundreds if not thousands of incoming links to your web site. At the bottom of this article and all other articles that I write I leave a bio or about the author section. In this section I have links to my websites. I post these articles everywhere in article databases and e?mail it to newsletter publishers in the hopes that they will use my article in their newsletter and or web site. This is so popular right now that the pros are saying if you are not doing it you need to be. Writing articles is difficult at times but it's well worth the effort.

Next make sure you have a way for people to link back to you naturally. Place a link on your site somewhere that says link to us and include instructions on how they should link to you. If you have informative content and update it regularly, people will link to your site automatically.

Last but not least there is always reciprocal linking. Reciprocal links require a link back to the site that is linking to you and as I mentioned earlier these links do not carry as much weight as far as the search engines are concerned. But reciprocal links are still a very valuable advertising and search engine optimization technique that should not be ignored. There are a couple rules that one should follow when using reciprocal links. First make sure you have already added the link to the other site before you ask for a link back. And make sure your link page's have no more than 50 links per page.

When using any of the above linking strategies it is very important that you use your targeted key words in the link and not just your web site URL. The search engines read the text between the tags to determine what your site is all about. If your site is about green leopard frogs then you should use green leopard frogs in your title and between the tags.

Anamchara - Living The Real Life

"Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide
No escape from reality."

This song goes on to advise, "Open your eyes and see."

There is much to see that is beautiful in this life. I am blessed. I get to share words of beauty with others. I get to share the seeing of the real life. This is the wonder of this life beyond the fantasy of "me" and "mine." I get to share the seeing beyond the limitation of ego.

I contend we "do" much of "our life." We do so much of our life that we get caught in a landslide. This is mostly the landslide of thought. We are encouraged to drive our life's energy forward. We do this by thinking about "what to do," "what to be," "what to think," "what to follow." We become a landslide of "shoulds," "must does," can't does" and "what ifs" to name a few. We tumble down the landslide of "our life."

There is a universal law. This is the law of attraction.

This law states that we attract to us the type of energy we send out into the world. We are all an energy field vibrating at different rates. The energy we attract is the energy we give out. What we give out we receive back. We attract the energy of ego or the energy of the Beloved. One is defensive and the other open. One is limited and the other unlimited. One is attractive, or even not attractive, in a fashionable sense of the word. The other is attraction itself. The other is the real life. It is the imitation of soul.

At a party this week I got to talk about soul. I talked about becoming an Anam Cara. This is the Celtic translation of the word Soul Friend ? "Anam" meaning "Soul" and "Cara" meaning "Friend." I am what I term a "Soul Practitioner." I practice releasing into the beauty of Soul. A Soul friend is looking for moment-to-moment communication. This is communication with the Beloved.

One can call the Beloved by the name God, Goddess, Universal Intelligence or the Force. The name is not the thing. It is the experience of real life lived non-separately from "all that is." This is living life beyond time and beyond space. It is living life in the eternal now. It is not learned through Life Coaching. It is learned though dropping all that you think you are. You then see the diamond of your being shine forth. Essentially it is learning to become a "nobody."

This communion is a love affair.

It is a love affair with the beauty of life as an experience of non-separateness from the Divine. This communion is what I love communicating. It is beyond words. It can be hinted at but not explained. It can be glimpsed in metaphysical poetry. It is spoken off in the writing of the Mystics. It is heard in music and viewed in art. It is caught in the flow of dark hair surrounding the face of a child. It is caught in moments of vulnerability amidst thanks giving. It is glimpsed in moments of surrender between two hearts.

So this week I move into soul. I move into higher vibrations that begin to move through this body. None of these "good vibrations" are mine. I am only ever a co-creator with the Divine. I am blessed this embodiment of life as a gift of love. This love is the real life. It is the first hand life. It is not the second hand experience of living "my life."

Our day-to-day life is just a fantasy.

All the mystics tell us that this is an illusion. The ego shouts back, "Are you crazy man?" The poets reply, "Open your eyes and see." We have our eyes open but most of the time we are blind. Our labels and our judgments blind us. Heaven is entered when you drop all your judging. This has to start with dropping any judgement you have of yourself. You are to give up deciding you are "good" or "bad" and simply "be" this process of energy moving moment to moment. This is the beginning of entering the real life. This is the beginning of honouring the presence you are.

As a lady at the party I attended this week advised, "Go spend time with a child." Be with a young child for a day and you might learn to see the way they see. Theirs are the eyes of wonder until they are blinded by the construct of time and judgment. Life then becomes something experienced through filters. We then learn to see through a glass darkly.

Soul Friends are given gifts in many ways.

At this party I was given a gift of a diamond. This was the largest diamond created by the light of the sun. It is rarely seen. It is rarely captured for the eye. I have this diamond now on my altar. It is surrounded by the darkness of night. It is so bright it illuminates an ocean. Such is the power of this diamond.

It reminds me that each and everyone of us is this diamond light. One glimpse of this diamond of your heart is enough. One glimpse is enough to light the ocean of compassion in the human heart. This diamond cuts thought the illusion of separateness from the real life. This diamond that is you is the real life. All else is fantasy.

Once you see this diamond light you will laugh. This will not be at the suffering of others. It will be at how wondrously creative we have been. As beings of light we have hidden this diamond within our hearts and completely forgotten about it. It then takes a Jesus, a Buddha or a Mohammad to come and remind us that what we treasure most is already here. We are only looking in the wrong place with eyes that cannot see.

Seek and you shall find this diamond. Escape into reality. You are held in the prison of ego doing the time of "your life." You have the key. Only you will find the door is never locked and you are the jailer.

Shine on you crazy diamonds.

Theres a Referral for Everyone

I worked for years as a mortgage loan officer. During this time I worked with two very successful loan officers, however, their styles were polar opposite. These two guys were opposites to the point where they basically didn't like each other, and spent most of the day avoiding one another.

Here are their stories.

The first loan officer whose work habits I am going to tell you about is Mike. Mike was a creature of habit. He was always the first one in the office every morning, where he would drink his cup of coffee and read his newspaper cover to cover.

Mike never left the office, he never did cold calling at night like the rest of us, he never sent out mailers, in fact, Mike never did any thing except deliver excellent customer service, and work his tale off for his customers.

Mike was also a student of the mortgage industry. He learned everything there was to know about it. He read countless magazines, and numerous articles. He attended seminars at night, and he knew all the niche programs of every lender our company dealt with.

Mikes excellent customer service along with his excellent knowledge of the industry put him in a position to help people in all kinds of financial situations.

A lot of these people were in desperate need of financial help. Mike was always capable of finding them a lender and a program to fit their financial needs, while being compassionate the entire time.

Mike treated these people with such kindness and dignity that he not only made their holiday card list, they talked him up to anyone that would listen.

Mikes inflow of referrals came from at least one hundred of his previous customers that he had helped in a time where the largest financial decision they would ever make was at stake.

These people referred family and friends to Mike because of the way he treated them, and the hard work he did for them. The bottom line is, they trusted him, and they liked him, so they referred to him.

The other guy . . .

The other guy I worked with was a guy named Joe. As I stated earlier, Joe and Mike were polar opposites.

Joe would come hustling into the office every morning approximately five minutes after the office opened. He made a grand entrance and said good morning to everyone in the office.

Joe was usually coming from breakfast with a client, or coming in from one of his many networking events.

You see, that was Joe's angle, he networked. Joe attended every networking event under the sun. The chambers, the lions clubs, the rotary clubs, you name it and he was there.

Joe had really put his time in at these organizations, and he had really paid his dues. He took the time to get to know the other members of the business community. He not only got to know them, he got to know about their business as well. This way he could refer business to them.

From these groups alone, Joe continued to receive his own steady flow of referrals.

These two scenarios are only two of the many ways you can keep referrals coming in. And, as you can see, different people use different techniques. In these two cases, the loan officers used what worked best for them.

Find out what works best for you, and stick with it! Good luck!

What The Adsense Top Earners Are Doing To Constantly Increase Their Earnings

It is really frustrating, is it not, to log into your Google Adsense earnings and find that you've had yet another disappointing day. Another day of making nothing or just a fraction of a penny.

More so when you continue to read about those guys making five figure monthly incomes from Google Adsense every day. Google Adsense terms and conditions require that earnings are kept secret. Still some of these guys claim that they obtained special permission to spill the beans. One of them recently revealed that they had made $45,000 in just one month. Perusing through the statement, there were single days where they made as much as 800 bucks. Can you imagine that?

Sorry, it is not my intention to make you feel worse than you already are so I will stop there and get on with my findings.

This article is based on my investigative journalism skills. Yep, some of us are still using skills we acquired years ago from our offline days. My objective was to find out as much as I could about what these top earners were doing different from the rest of us.

High Adsense Earners Do Exist

But first I had to establish whether these high earners existed at all. After all anybody can get online and tell all sorts of lies about anything. My investigations started off trying to separate the hype from the facts which is an almost-impossible task these days. I have read several articles by sceptics which clearly state that most of these so-called high earners do not exist.

Well the truth is that despite the high number of hype peddlers out there, these guys are for real.

Without disclosing too much about some of my sources whom I intend to use in the future and can therefore not disclose, there are several pieces of evidence that point not only to their existence, but to their growing numbers.

The first is the amazing pace at which Google earnings from this business is growing. Check any top affiliate program and compare their figures to Google Adsense and you will begin to see what I mean. Google is a public company and their figures from earnings are widely available.

Adsense Keywords Do Matter

High traffic is important and effective online traffic tools are well known. They include for example PPC ads, including the very same Adsense ads. Articles are increasingly important because when it comes to traffic, the numbers are not enough, the quality of the traffic is also very important.

But the absolutely critical factor in achieving high Adsense earnings is not traffic. It is actually the keywords used. With the difference in earnings from a click ranging from a fraction of a penny to $100, you can begin to appreciate what we are saying here.

This is the reason why almost everybody else is selling those lists online these days.

My investigations unearthed evidence that those top earners are constantly researching new keywords. They spend a lot of time doing that (more time than they spend doing anything else) and to pay for some of their wasted efforts (every genuine research effort will have plenty of that) some of them are peddling the lists that they have graduated from or do not need anymore. Before you get upset please remember that this is standard business practice. A smart entrepreneur always minimizes on wastage of any kind.

Generally there are some keyword topics that pay more than others. To give you just two examples, health and electronics generally score much higher across the board than other areas of interest in terms of high earning keywords. The top earners are using this information

Hire an Adsense Expert

This is the most amazing aspect my research unearthed.

Christopher Kyalo is an experienced ghostwriter who writes quality articles designed to attract the highest paying Google Adsense ads, and at dirt-cheap rates. You can read the rest of this article at his blog http://webcontentprovider.blogspot.com. He can be reached at ckyalo at yahoo.com

Disciplining the Wild Child

Do you have a wild child? Then this article may be for you. Do you just blow up when you can't take it any more? Then this article is definitely for you.

Abuse victims, when they become parents, are handicapped in two ways. One, they have no clue how to give good discipline because they never saw it done. A parent who knows how does not resort to abuse. Or, I should say, a parent who knows how deep in his/her bones, not just intellectually, does not need to resort to abuse. So if you were beaten, humiliated, yelled at, ignored, neglected, abandoned, criticized, or any of the hundred other ways of being abused, you never saw good discipline in action. So you just don't know what it looks like.

Now, suppose you take a parenting course. Here's handicap #2. Even when you learn--intellectually--what it is, many parents who have been abused have a gut-level abhorence of anything that remotely looks like violence. Any form of discipline that is perfectly "kosher" may look to an abuse victim like something harsh, mean, and hateful. And those parents just can't seem to put it into action. That's when the leniency paves the way for the very abuse they don't ever want to be guity of doing: Because they have failed to discipline their child, the child, of course, gets out of hand, eventually. That's what normal children do, if unstopped. So then, these sweet, lovely parents who couldn't bring themselves to discipline their child lash out at them angrily. And they actually feel justified! "I've had enough!" They exclaim.

Well, that's true, but whose fault is that? You've had enough because you didn't nip it in the bud with proper discipline. Now you criticize or yell or hit or whatever and actually think that the child is "bad." Hey, that's exactly the mistake your parents might have made. So if this sounds like you, don't confuse proper discipline with abuse. Start the discipline and then you won't have to blow up.

For example, I once worked with a family in which the mother felt so guilty about a remarriage and so abhorent of abuse because of the abuse she had received that she also never would discipline that child. Until one day she discovered that, at 14, her daughter was sneaking out the window at night to go party. Then, as you can imagine, she lost it.

If you're not clear what discipline is, read the article on it. click here. But don't run away from it or it'll only get worse.

Lunesta For Insomnia: A Guide To Compare Generic Lunesta ( Eszopiclone )

We all know that there's no such thing as cheap Lunesta, but if you'd like to save money without sacrificing quality, you may want to buy Eszopiclone instead. Eszopiclone is the generic version of Lunesta, the only prescription sleep aid approved for long term use.

When compared with the other prescription sleep aids, Eszopiclone is the best buy if you're looking for a way to just finally get a good night's sleep without waking up drowsy and dysfunctional. When you begin taking Eszopiclone, you'll enjoy another huge benefit: Unlike other sleep aids, Eszopiclone is the only one approved for long term use. That means you can enjoy months to years of better sleep, rather than just a few days.

When looking for the sleep aid medication with the best overall value, Eszopiclone is an obvious choice. But what's the best choice when it's time to buy Eszopiclone online at an internet pharmacy?

Many people just look for the lowest prices on their sleep medications, and they end up being ripped off. Some get the wrong pills, and some receive impure medication that doesn't work. But others never even get their order in the mail. In many markets, such as the car market, the saying that "you get what you pay for" doesn't really apply. But this saying is definitely true when we shop for prescription medications online.

We have taken it upon ourselves to research every online pharmacy we can find, and in most cases, the news isn't good. Many end up linking back one processing company, and only some of them are legitimate. In the interest of breathing some real life into the online pharmacy industry, we have compiled our research into a "best buys" website.
